Abingdon and Washington County are a mecca for recreation enthusiasts. The Crooked Cabin is an easy three block walk from the entrance to the Virginia Creeper Trail, a nationally renowned multi-use trail for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. This 34-mile trail makes a gradual incline to the top of Whitetop Mountain and ends just over the border in North Carolina. The Brook House, Creekside and Meadow Cottage are all within walking/biking distance of the trail.
Other known area trails include the Appalachian Trail, Iron Mountain Trail, Daniel Boone Trail and the 76 Bike Route. Mount Rogers Recreation Area, easily accessed from neighboring Damascus, Virginia, has a number of novice and challenging mountain bike trails. Guide service is available.
Also in the immediate area are a number of TVA lakes, such as South Holston and Boone, all hosting swimming and camping areas as well as fishing, float boats rentals and water sports. South Holston Lake is an easy eight-mile drive from the cabin. Boone Lake is a 30 minute drive into Tennessee.
Abingdon is home of the world-famous Barter Theatre, the State Theater of Virginia. The downtown area houses a number of antique, specialty and apparel shops. The Arts Depot and William King Regional Arts Center have artists-in-residence, galleries and gift shops. Classes in a variety of media are offered. Carriage rides, providing a relaxed tour of the historic district, are available.
The newest addition to our area is the fabulous Heartwood Artisan Center which is Virginia's gateway to the southwest's art, music, food and culture. An amazing architectural delight, a visit to Heartwood is mandatory while in our area! The William King Arts Center and Arts Depot as well as other local galleries are also well worth adding to your itinerary!
If it is music you are wanting...what better way to enjoy the heritage of southwest Virginia's music with a tour along the Crooked Road or a weekend trip to Carter Fold in Mendota, Virginia. Music is alive and well in our area and you only have to turn your head to find a concert or festival where you can tap your feet to your heart's content!
And don't forget to get up early and visit our award winning Abingdon Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings (Tuesdays afternoons, too) where you will find not only the best in local produce and foods, but also crafts, music and a great time.
